If you’re thinking of painting your brick wall or fireplace, you’re in good company. It’s a popular, inexpensive way to give your home a great new look. One of the best ways to refresh a brick wall or fireplace is to paint it, but if a solid color brick doesn’t work for your style, an easy way to change it is to embrace the texture, depth, and dimension of the brick by enhancing a more rustic or aged look.

There are a few other things to think about when creating your brick fireplace masterpiece. Even if you’re not using it to burn, your fireplace is still more exposed to humidity than your interior walls because of the flue. So, it’s critical to prepare the surface correctly by cleaning the brick thoroughly and using a primer designed to block stains that can form when exposed brick meets humidity.
If you are considering a new finish, be sure to use heat-resistant or high-heat paint if you plan on using it to burn. If the bricks are in poor shape, painting can magnify these issues by sealing the brick, allowing moisture to linger, and making it difficult to repair. Be sure the brick is cleaned and has had the proper time to dry before continuing with the finish. We use our trusty moisture gauge to help us along, but you can find a decent one at your hardware store for a minimal cost.
When painting a brick wall or fireplace, most of the work is in the preparations. Be sure the brick is in good condition, and if there are small cracks, you can fill these with acrylic caulk or mortar.
